FILM & FOOD: RAMEN SHOP (INCL. RAMEN)
Beginning this January, we launch a fresh edition of Film & Food, our bi-monthly celebration of Japanese cinema and cuisine. Every second month, we’ll pair a comforting Japanese film with a steaming bowl of ramen crafted by our Bar Strangelove kitchen crew. A perfect way to warm up your evening—on screen and in your bowl.
On the menu: A steamy bowl of vegetarian ramen featuring our house-made mushroom broth, shoyu-marinated egg, fried seitan and a mix of fresh vegetables.
For young ramen chef Masato, food is everything. In his Japanese father’s restaurant, he prepares the most delicious ramen, while at home he tries to recall the wonderful dishes made by his Singaporean mother, who died when he was ten. When his father suddenly passes away as well, Masato decides to travel to Singapore. With his mother’s diary in hand, he finds his uncle and grandmother and discovers the roles they played in the touching yet tragic love story of his parents. Masato sets out to heal old family wounds by creating a special ramen dish that unites both cultures. Ramen Shop, by acclaimed director Eric Khoo, is a heartwarming culinary film about a passionate cook searching for his past — a journey filled with family traditions and mouthwatering recipes, all celebrating the unifying power of food. The film had its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2018.
