LAB SUGGESTIONS:
LA MEGLIO GIOVENTÙ
(PART I & II INCL. ITALIAN MEAL)
This month’s special pick from our Suggestions Board will be the epic elegy to family and country, La Meglio Gioventù. A towering work of narrative fiction, this highlight of contemporary Italian cinema earns its 6 hours running time by telling an engrossing family saga with compelling characters. In between Part I and II, you will be served a comfortable Italian meal by Bar Strangelove.
La Meglio gioventù tells the story of an Italian family from the late 1960s to today. Nicola and Matteo are two brothers who initially share the same dreams, books and friendships. When they meet Giorgia, a young girl suffering from mental disorders, their future necessarily takes a different turn. Nicola decides to become a psychiatrist, Matteo gives up his studies and reports to the police.
The small and big dramas in the lives of Matteo, Nicola and their family run parallel to events that marked recent Italian history: the flooding of Florence, the fight against the Sicilian mafia, the big soccer matches of the Italian national team, the student protests, the terrorism of the Red Brigades, the Fiat crisis…
La Meglio Gioventù is the fresco of a generation rising up for itself that tried not to give in to the world to leave it a little better.
