FIGHT THE POWER: DAISIES INCL. Q&A
For the next edition of Fight The Power: Films of Resistance on March 12th, we turn to Věra Chytilová’s Daisies (1966)—a radical act of cinematic defiance and one of the most subversive films of the Czech New Wave. A riot of surrealism, satire, and unfiltered rebellion, Daisies is more than a playful act of resistance—it’s a manifesto for tearing down the patriarchy with laughter, chaos, and unapologetic disobedience.
Following the screening, moderator Kiriko Mechanicus will be joined by a special guest Anja Meulenbelt, an icon of Dutch feminism and activism, to dissect the film’s sharp political and feminist critique. Together, they’ll explore its radical spirit, enduring influence, and the ways we, too, can channel its anarchic energy in a world that still demands disruption.
About the film
Věra Chytilová’s Daisies (1966) is a vibrant, anarchic masterpiece of the Czech New Wave, blending surrealism, satire, and visual experimentation. The film follows two rebellious young women who, deciding that the world is corrupt, embark on a playful spree of chaos and destruction. With its bold editing, striking color shifts, and absurd humor, Daisies is a radical feminist statement that challenges authority, consumerism, and cinematic conventions. Banned upon release for its subversive themes, it has since become a cult classic and a landmark of avant-garde cinema. Decades later, Daisies remains a dazzling, defiant burst of creative energy that feels as fresh and revolutionary as ever.
About the speaker
With over five decades of fierce commitment to dismantling the patriarchy and advocating for unapologetic rebellion, Anja Meulenbelt’s voice is one that resonates throughout history. As the author of De Schaamte Voorbij (The Shame Is Over), she became a central figure in the second wave of feminism, shaping a generation’s vision of liberation and resistance.
Please note that the talk will only follow the screening on March 12th at 19:00.
