AKSIE-FILM: SORRY TO BOTHER YOU
AKSIE-film screens classic or less well-known films about revolt, protest, activism and revolution. As the major problems of our time cannot be wished away, it might be time for the passive viewer to become actively engaged. How to begin? AKSIE-film will show you by combining the power of cinema with talks and discussions by experts and activists on a range of topics.
AKSIE-film is back! After a long COVID-19 break, we are proud to present our new edition: about the anti-racism movement and the need for decolonisation.
When George Floyd was brutally killed by cops in May, a huge protest movement erupted in the US that soon went global: Black Lives Matter. This movement sought to expose the systemic nature of racism in our societies, the structural inequality it helps to sustain, and the violence committed against black and brown people by police everywhere. And to fight it. Attracting huge numbers of protesters even in the Netherlands, the movement firmly confronted the world with the reality of racism and the demand for change.
But how do we move forward from here? What are the goals of the anti-racism movement? And how do anti-racism activists struggle to achieve them?
Cinematic centre piece will be Boots Riley’s Sorry to Bother You: an exuberant dark satire about racist and capitalist exploitation. Well-known historian and public intellectual dr. Karwan Fatah-Black will first give a talk about our colonial history and present, and then we will talk with BLM-activist Caitlin Schaap about anti-racist organising.
Sorry to Bother You (2018)
