Raimunda woont in Madrid met haar 14-jarige dochter Paula en haar luie dronkaard van een man. Haar zus Soledad is gescheiden en runt een illegale haarsalon vanuit haar appartement. Drie jaar geleden verloren de zussen hun ouders in een brand. Raimunda (Penelope Cruz) is a struggling mother who holds down several jobs to support her unemployed husband and teenage daughter. When the ghost of her mother suddenly appears, long-repressed family secrets surface and it soon becomes apparent that things may not be what they seem.
