Voor veel kijkers roept Ralph Bakshi’s The Lord of the Rings (1978) herinneringen op aan versleten VHS-kopieën en wordt de film vaak overschaduwd door Peter Jacksons latere blockbusterverfilming. Lange tijd werd de film bekritiseerd omdat hij onvoltooid bleef en vanwege het uitgebreide gebruik van rotoscopie. Toch verdient Bakshi’s versie een herwaardering: hij slaagde erin wat filmmakers als Walt Disney, John Boorman en Stanley Kubrick niet lukte — Tolkiens enorme en complexe wereld naar het grote scherm brengen.
