This 1991 American sci-fi thriller stars Renée Soutendijk in a dual role as both a scientist and her creation—a dangerous robot armed with a nuclear weapon. When the robot malfunctions and goes on a destructive rampage, she’s pursued by a tough military agent played by Gregory Hines.
Dutch actress Renée Soutendijk, born in The Hague in 1957, rose to fame through Paul Verhoeven films like Spetters (1980) and De Vierde Man (1983). Her breakthrough came with Het Meisje Met Het Rode Haar (1981), portraying resistance fighter Hannie Schaft. Eve Of Destruction marked her Hollywood debut, but after its poor critical reception and box office failure, she returned to the Netherlands to be with her family and for a return to the European films she missed making.
Thirty-four years later, the film deserves reconsideration. Soutendijk’s performance stands out as she brings depth to the outlandish plot. While not a masterpiece, it delivers plenty of action—gunfights, chases, and a rampaging cyborg—perfect for fans of over-the-top ’90s B-movies. Its unique blend of feminist themes, action clichés, and bizarre sci-fi elements adds to its charm.
We’re thrilled to welcome Ms. Soutendijk as she joins us for this special Straight to Video screening, to introduce the film and discuss her experiences during a Q&A afterward.
