Hopeloze romanticus Bear heeft al jaren een crush op zijn jeugdvriendin Nikki, voor wie hun relatie puur platonisch is. Na een zoveelste mislukte versierpoging grijpt hij naar een behekst, magisch ornament dat Nikki als een blok voor hem moet laten vallen. Bears plan werkt, maar de gevolgen zijn niet te overzien.
In Obsession, de tweede film van regisseur Curry Barker, wordt de bekende genrewaarschuwing ‘be careful what you wish for’ tot in het extreme doorgevoerd. Terwijl Bears ultieme sprookje binnen no time in een duistere nachtmerrie verandert, legt Barker bloot hoe inherent gewelddadig romantische obsessie kan zijn. De twee hoofdrolspelers vormen het kloppende hart van deze high-concept horrorfilm – en dan met name Inde Navarette, wiens Freaky Nikki constant laveert tussen kwetsbaar verlangen en gruwelijke marteling. De eerste helft van de film zit nog vol zwarte humor, maar de groeiende spanning en Bears’ totale wanhoop maken van Obsession een heerlijk onbehaaglijk zit.

Hopeless romantic Bear has a longstanding crush on his childhood pal Nikki, who sees him as no more than a friend. After another failed profession of love, Bear comes across a trinket with magic powers and uses it to make Nikki fall for him. It works, but Bear gets more than he bargained for.
Obsession, director Curry Barker’s second feature, takes the familiar supernatural story warning ‘be careful what you wish for’ to a whole new level. As Bear’s fantasy rapidly deteriorates into a nightmare, the film’s tone becomes darker, exposing the inherent violence in romantic objectification. The two leads keep this high-concept horror firmly grounded – especially Inde Navarrette, whose Freaky Nikki switches from doe-eyed desire to devastating torment. While dark humour define the first half of the film, the growing tension and Bear’s desperation make Obsession an increasingly uneasy watch.
