In Parijs in 1959 draait Jean-Luc Godard in 20 dagen zijn debuutfilm À Bout de Souffle, wat later uitgroeit tot een legendarische klassieker. The film marks the beginning of the Nouvelle Vague, a new movement in French cinema. Godard, until then a film critic writing for the renowned Cahiers du Cinéma, decided that making films himself was the best form of criticism. He secured financing for a low-budget production and adapted François Truffaut’s scenario about a gangster couple to his own vision. Despite doubts from cast and crew about Godard’s unconventional methods, his debut was a resounding success, drawing over 2.5 million viewers in France, earning awards for Godard, and a BAFTA nomination for lead actress Jean Seberg.
