For the next edition of Fight the Power, we will be screening Morgan Knibbe’s The Garden of Earthly Delights — a haunting portrait of exploitation, innocence, and survival in the slums of Manila. The film follows 11-year-old Ginto, who dreams of gang life while his sister Asia turns to sex work to survive. When their paths cross with a Dutch tourist consumed by his own dark desires, Knibbe lays bare how colonial legacies continue to shape bodies, longing, and power.
Blurring fiction and reality, Knibbe’s remarkable fictional debut captures the uneasy link between beauty and brutality, exploring how cycles of domination persist long after empires fall.
Following the screening, join moderator Kiriko Mechanicus for a conversation with Morgan Knibbe, fresh from his success at the Netherlands Film Festival, where the film won multiple awards including Best Director. Together, they’ll explore how The Garden of Earthly Delights confronts the legacy of domination and the responsibility of artists to confront the times they live in.
