Ernest Cole: Lost And Found

Met zijn schrijnende beelden liet fotograaf Ernest Cole (1940-1990) eind jaren ’60 als eerste zien wat apartheid betekende voor zwarte Zuid-Afrikanen als hijzelf. De wereld reageerde geschokt. Cole werd geprezen om zijn talent, samengebracht in zijn boek House of Bondage. Maar het tonen van de harde werkelijkheid had een prijs: Cole werd verbannen naar New York. Dat hij in de VS steeds meer overeenkomsten zag met het racisme in zijn eigen land, was een harde les. In de jaren tachtig raakte Cole in de vergetelheid, mede doordat zijn negatieven verloren leken te zijn gegaan. Hij stierf er in 1990 in armoede, zonder ooit nog terug te keren naar zijn thuisland. Dat leek het einde van zijn turbulente verhaal. Totdat er in 2017 60.000 negatieven van zijn werk werden ontdekt in een Zweedse bankkluis. Ernest Cole: Lost and Found is een confronterende documentaire en innemende hommage aan de fotograaf wiens werk tot op de dag van vandaag actueel is. Aan de hand van zijn verbluffende foto’s vertelt regisseur Raoul Peck (I Am Not Your Negro) over zijn omzwervingen, zijn onrust als kunstenaar en zijn dagelijkse woede over medeplichtigheid van de Westerse wereld tegenover de verschrikkingen van het apartheidsregime. Ernest Cole: Lost and Found maakte een zegetocht langs vele filmfestivals en werd in Cannes bekroond met de L’Oeil d’or voor beste documentaire.

With his harrowing images, photographer Ernest Cole (1940-1990) was the first to show in the late 1960s what apartheid meant for black South Africans like himself. The world reacted with shock. Cole was praised for his talent, compiled in his book House of Bondage. But showing the harsh reality came at a price: Cole was exiled to New York. That he saw increasing similarities in the U.S. to racism in his own country was a harsh lesson. In the 1980s, Cole fell into oblivion, partly because his negatives seemed lost. He died there in poverty in 1990, without ever returning to his homeland. That seemed to be the end of his turbulent story. Until, in 2017, 60,000 negatives of his work were discovered in a Swedish bank vault. Ernest Cole: Lost and Found is a confrontational documentary and engaging tribute to the photographer whose work remains relevant to this day. Through his stunning photographs, director Raoul Peck (I Am Not Your Negro) recounts his wanderings, his turmoil as an artist and his daily anger at the complicity of the Western world in the face of the horrors of the apartheid regime. Ernest Cole: Lost and Found made a triumphant tour of many film festivals and was awarded the L’Oeil d’or for best documentary at Cannes.
