After a summer hiatus, the Celebrating Cinema Film Club returns with a special screening of Charlie’s Angels (2000)—a high-octane, gloriously over-the-top ode to the golden age of the chick flick. Timed to coincide with our upcoming podcast on the art (and disappearance) of the genre, this screening revisits a film that is as outrageous and stylish as it is knowingly silly, capturing the audacity and confidence of a genre often dismissed in its time.
Yet Charlie’s Angels also speaks to how chick flicks of the late ’90s and 2000s could be both liberating and dated—delighting in their camp pleasures while revealing blind spots in cultural awareness. With an introduction by filmmaker and podcast host Kiriko Mechanicus, this screening is both a nostalgic romp and an invitation to ask: what did we lose when chick flicks faded from the mainstream, and what do they still have to teach us today?
