Alpha

Na haar Gouden Palm in 2021 voor Titane keert Julia Ducournau terug in de Competitie met Alpha, een intiemer maar even compromisloos werk. Centraal staat de 13-jarige Alpha, wier puberteit samenvalt met een fictieve epidemie die de echo’s van de jaren ’80 en ’90 en de aidscrisis oproept. Ducournau onderzoekt angst, schaamte en de manier waarop de samenleving weigerde de crisis rechtstreeks onder ogen te zien, thema’s die wortelen in haar eigen jeugdherinneringen. Hoewel minder expliciet in lichamelijke horror dan Titane of Raw, blijft de film gefocust op transformatie en de chaos van adolescentie. Met Mélissa Boros als Alpha, Golshifteh Farahani als haar moeder en Tahar Rahim in een radicale rol als haar besmette oom, belooft de film een indringende en lichamelijke ervaring te worden.

After winning the Palme d’Or in 2021 with Titane, Julia Ducournau returns to Competition with Alpha, a more intimate but equally fearless film. At its center is 13-year-old Alpha, whose adolescence collides with an invented epidemic, echoing the shadow of AIDS in the 1980s and 1990s. Ducournau explores fear, shame, and society’s refusal to confront the crisis directly, themes rooted in her own childhood memories of the era. While less focused on graphic body horror than Titane or Raw, the film continues her exploration of bodily transformation in times of upheaval. With Mélissa Boros as Alpha, Golshifteh Farahani as her mother, and Tahar Rahim in a transformative role as her infected uncle, the film promises a haunting and visceral experience.
