GREEK WEIRD WAVE: THE FILMS OF YORGOS LANTHIMOS
Known for his distinctly absurdist features, walking the tightrope between psychological thriller and pitch-black comedy, Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos burst onto the international arthouse scene in 2003. With the re-release of his festival hit Dogtooth on July 11th and the new film Kinds Of Kindness coming out on July 4th, our Greek Weird Wave selection returns to our cinema.
A central figure within the so-called ‘weird wave’ of Greek cinema, Yorgos Lanthimos (1973, Greece) started his career directing several dance and music videos, commercials, short films and theatre plays. His second feature film Dogtooth (2009) won the Un Certain Regard Prize at Cannes and was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award in 2011. With his subsequent films Alps (2011), The Lobster (2015) and The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017), Lanthimos continued receiving critical acclaim and awards at several festivals. The Favourite (2018), received the Grand Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival and a record of 10 British Independent Film Awards. The Favourite was also nominated for 10 Academy Awards; Olivia Colman won Best Actress. His film Poor Things (2023) was nominated 11 Academy Awards.
