LAB CLASSICS: THE THIRD MAN (75TH ANNIVERSARY 4K RESTORATION)
In honor of its 75th anniversary, Carol Reed’s iconic film-noir masterpiece The Third Man has been beautifully restored in 4K for the first time, showcasing the genius of this beloved classic, which has been voted ‘the best British film of all time’ by the British Film Institute on several occasions.
Director Carol Reed outdid herself with this noir-style thriller set against the backdrop of World War II-ravaged Europe. Holly Martins (Joseph Cotton), a naive writer of pulp westerns, arrives in shadowy post-war Vienna to meet his old friend Harry Lime (Orson Welles), but discovers that Lime has been killed in a suspicious accident. Martins meets a British military policeman (Trevor Howard) and Lime’s girlfriend (Alida Valli) and when he hears conflicting accounts of the circumstances of Lime’s death, he is forced to rethink both his relationship with his friend Harry and his own worldview.
The Third Man is a consummate production, from Graham Greene’s witty, disturbing screenplay to Robert Krasker’s evocative cinematography and Anton Karas’ unforgettable zither score. But despite his minimal screentime, Orson Welles steals the show in an iconic role as the amoral Harry Lime.
