LAB CLASSICS: FIVE EASY PIECES
INCL. INTRODUCTION
On January 23rd director Jeroen Houben’s new film Torch Song will hit our cinema and so we asked the filmmaker to pick a film that inspired him in making his new film. Houben chose Bob Rafelson’s beautiful classic Five Easy Pieces. On January 16th, Houben will introduce the film and dive into his love for this classic of the New Hollywood movement.
Director Jeroen Houben on Five Easy Pieces
While writing my film Torch Song, I thought a lot about Five Easy Pieces. Both films are about an outsider who as a child was groomed for a promising career in music, but was unable to conform to parental expectations. Both characters remain essentially tormented, insecure children, stuck in an adult existence. Torch Song is also heavily inspired by that free, character-driven narrative form so characteristic of the 1970s “New Hollywood” cinema, of which Five Easy Pieces was a benchmark.
