INTERNATIONAL CINEMA: RIETLAND
We continue with our series of International Cinema, where we offer the best foreign movies with English subtitles. Rietland marks the feature debut of filmmaker Sven Bresser, whose psychological drama had its world premiere at Cannes in the Critics’ Week section. Following in the footsteps of The Polish Bride (1998) and Borgman (2013), it joins the select group of Dutch films to premiere at Cannes.
For years Johan has been cutting reeds used to cover roofs or weave into baskets, mats, and screens. One day he discovers the lifeless body of a girl on his land, triggering a vague yet overwhelming sense of guilt. While caring for his granddaughter, Johan — played by real-life reed cutter Gerrit Knobbe — searches for answers and attempts to confront Evil itself.
Please note that screenings of this film will be available with either Dutch or English subtitles.
