FIGHT THE POWER: DO THE RIGHT THING
INCL. Q&A
Our monthly series Fight The Power: Films Of Resistance presents a bold and uncompromising selection of films that challenge power, confront oppression, and inspire change. Through screenings, introductions, and Q&As with special guests and experts, we explore how cinema not only frames revolutions but ignites them—offering radical ideas that resonate deeply with the urgencies of our time. These are films that refuse to sit quietly, daring us to rethink, resist, and reimagine the systems that define our world.
For this first edition, we are screening Spike Lee’s iconic Do The Right Thing, a powerful film set on the hottest day of the year that challenges us to question what it truly means to “do the right thing.” As we enter a new year, it is ever more urgent for us to consider our responsibility to do the right thing.
Here to inspire us with their own path of resistance, Akwasi O. Ansah and Jamal Jama will be part of a panel talk following the screening. Much like Spike Lee’s work, both speakers have embraced the DIY ethos and community-building principles of Hip Hop to drive social change. Join us for an insightful discussion on how we ourselves can apply the principles of Hip Hop culture to inspire transformation and empower communities.
About our guests
Akwasi O. Ansah is a writer, rapper, presenter and influential voice in the social debate. He advocates for discussions around identity, equality and inclusivity through his outspoken approach to social issues, combining art with social engagement to amplify diverse voices in media. As co-founder and creative director of Omroep ZWART, Akwasi leads Europe’s newest public broadcasting company. The organization serves as a creative disruptor and platform for diverse stories and underrepresented voices, producing documentaries and programs that emphasize authenticity and representation. Through Omroep ZWART, Akwasi aims to foster inclusive dialogue and drive positive societal change through storytelling that builds empathy across the Dutch public system and beyond.
Jamal Jama is a communications strategist who works in the intersection of culture, storytelling and branding. This has translated to starting What’s Culture: a media brand focused on uncovering the historical context, inspirations and figures behind moments in music, culture, film, art, fashion, design and photography. Through this concept, the platform has become a growing community of people who seek depth and context to stories that will otherwise fade into oblivion.
