REVERBERATIONS OF PERSEPOLIS, THE GRAPHIC NOVEL
In honour of the 4K restoration of Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis, we invite you to a literary evening exploring the reverberations of the graphic novel it is based on. Join us for poetic presentations and personal reflections on this iconic work and its ongoing impact.
More than twenty years after its publication, Persepolis resonates more than ever, as movements like Woman, Life, Freedom amplify the voices of those fighting for equality and human rights in Iran and beyond. Satrapi’s reflections on life in late-80s and early-90s Iran, as well as the trials and tribulations of her diasporic teenage years in Vienna, remain emotionally powerful and deeply recognisable for many.
The evening will feature poetry and reflections by poet and filmmaker Nafiss Nia, and a reading accompanied by audio by musician and heritage storyteller Nushin Afzal Watan Naini. A small panel discussion will invite both speakers and audience members to share their thoughts on the ongoing impact of Persepolis in today’s world. Chai and Nabat will be present to accompany the conversation with mehman nawaz – Iranian hospitality.
Nafiss Nia is an Iranian-Dutch filmmaker, poet, cultural entrepreneur and public speaker. Nafiss is also the director of Granate Foundation in Amsterdam and in that capacity produces programs such as Words That Matter, The Poetry on the sidewalk and How do you dance a poem.
Nushin Afzal Watan Naini is founder, producer, and bassist of the Amsterdam-based band Devon Rexi, through which she delves into her Iranian-Kurdish heritage to explore the boundaries of language from a post-diasporic standpoint. She also works at the socialist-architectural museum Het Schip and creates visual artworks.
Please note that this panel discussion will be conducted in English.
