Richard Sarafian regisseerde deze minimalistische achtervolgingsfilm met Barry Newman als ex-marinier, ex-racewagenchauffeur en agent Kowalski. Hij rijdt naar Denver om een auto af te leveren en een ander voertuig op te halen om naar San Francisco te rijden. Om de vijftien uur durende rit naar San Francisco draaglijk te maken, slikt hij een lading peppillen en rijdt weg. Vrijwel meteen krijgt hij van de politie te horen dat hij aan de kant moet gaan, maar Kowalski weigert te stoppen. Kowalski negeert de politie en er ontstaat een achtervolging. Kowalski wordt aangemoedigd door een blinde zwarte disc jockey, Super Soul (Cleavon Little), die zijn komen en gaan aankondigt in zijn lokale radioshow en Kowalski de hemel in prijst als “de laatste Amerikaan voor wie snelheid vrijheid van de ziel betekent”. De hype van Super Soul maakt van Kowalski een mediasensatie en de fans van Kowalski nemen toe – net als de politieauto’s die hem achtervolgen – terwijl hij tegen de klok racet om zowel de auto als zichzelf af te leveren op zijn bestemming in San Francisco.

Richard Sarafian directed this minimalist chase film, starring Barry Newman as ex-marine, ex-race car driver and cop named Kowalski. He drives into Denver to deliver a car and pick up another vehicle to drive to San Francisco. To make the fifteen-hour drive to San Francisco bearable he pops a load of pep pills and drives off. Almost immediately, he is told to pull over by the police, but Kowalski refuses to stop. Ignoring the cops, a police chase ensues. Egging Kowalski on is a blind black disc jockey, Super Soul (Cleavon Little), who announces his comings and goings on his local radio show, praising Kowalski to the skies as “the last American to whom speed means freedom of the soul.” Super Soul’s hype makes Kowalski a media sensation and Kowalski fans mount up — as do the police cars chasing him — as he races against time to deliver both the car and himself to his San Francisco destination.
