Praagse lente, 1968..maar laat anderen zich maar druk maken over kleinigheden zoals vrijheid en het najagen van geluk. De chirurg en vrouwengek Tomas (Daniel Day-Lewis) concentreert zich liever op het geluk dat “de jacht’ hem oplevert. Hij is vastbesloten op een ondraaglijk lichte manier te leven. Politiek boeit hem niet, instant genot regeert zijn leven. Tot hij, tegen zijn principes in, verliefd wordt op Tereza (Juliette Binoche), een plattelandsmeisje met een voorliefde voor boeken. Er ontstaat een passionele driehoeksverhouding tussen de twee en de chique Sabina (Lena Olin), waarmee Tomas een puur seksuele relatie onderhoudt. En dan rollen de Russische tanks Praag binnen… De lyrisch-erotische verfilming van Milan Kundera’s complexe roman is een waar meesterwerk met een ijzersterke cast, een ervaren regisseur Philip Kaufman (The Right Stuff, Henry & June) en de legendarische Saul Zaentz (The English Patient, Amadeus) als producer.
The Unbearable Lightness of Being is based on Milan Kundera’s internationally acclaimed novel. It is a love story that begins during the Prague Spring, the liberalization of communist Czechoslovakia that the Soviets crushed with the invasion of August 1968. Tomas, a prominent young brain surgeon, is a bachelor and an epic womanizer. His relationships, whether short or long-term, are light by design. He meets a young woman in a country bar who moves in and eventually marries him, even as he continues other affairs. Their lives are disrupted by the Soviet invasion, which the film depicts through scenes of the characters edited with documentary clips of the historic event. This film is part of our tribute to Juliette Binoche.
