In dit intieme drama over ouder worden, leven en sterven, staat de kracht van vriendschap centraal. Ingrid (Julianne Moore) is een succesvol schrijfster die ontdekt dat een oude vriendin Martha (Tilda Swinton) ziek is. Ze waren elkaar uit het oog verloren, maar de twee vinden elkaar direct weer als ze samen terugdenken aan het leven dat ze vroeger deelden. Wanneer Martha’s gezondheid achteruit gaat, vraagt ze Ingrid haar te steunen bij haar zelfgekozen einde. Ze verlaten New York en trekken naar een mooie villa net buiten de stad. Omringd door de natuur en met hun gedeelde passie voor kunst en een vroegere liefde (John Turturro) vieren ze het leven zolang het nog kan. The Room Next Door ging in première op het Filmfestival van Venetië en won daar de prestigieuze Gouden Leeuw voor Beste Film. De film is gebaseerd op het boek Wat scheelt eraan van Sigrid Nunez.

They had lost track of each other, but the two immediately find each other again as they reminisce together about the life they used to share. When Martha’s health declines, she asks Ingrid to support her through her self-chosen end. They leave New York and move to a beautiful villa just outside the city. Surrounded by nature and with their shared passion for art and a former love (John Turturro), they celebrate life while they still can. The Room Next Door premiered at the Venice Film Festival, where it won the prestigious Golden Lion for Best Film. The film is based on the book What Matters by Sigrid Nunez.
