Paper Moon

Het jaar is 1936. De wees Addie Loggins (Tatum O’Neal, in haar filmdebuut) wordt toevertrouwd aan de zorg van de onethische reizende bijbelverkoper Moses Pray (Ryan O’Neal, Tatum’s vader), die al dan niet haar vader is. Onderweg naar Addie’s familie komt Moses erachter dat de 9-jarige een handvol is: ze rookt, vloekt en is bijna net zo sluw en manipulatief als hij. Ze bundelen hun krachten als oplichters en werken zo goed samen dat Addie er een hekel aan heeft om het team te verbreken — dat is één van de redenen dat ze de romance tussen Moses en het goede meisje Trixie Delight (Madeline Kahn) saboteert. Later, terwijl hij een schuld van $200 probeert te vereffenen die Addie beweert dat hij haar schuldig is, loopt Moses een bootlegger (John Hillerman) tegen het lijf en wordt hij bijna doodgeslagen door de tweelingbroer van de sheriff. Moeizaam vermand Moses zich en brengt Addie naar haar familie, waarna ze pertinent weigert om van zijn zijde te wijken. De film is in zwart-wit gefotografeerd door Laszlo Kovacs en is grotendeels op locatie gemaakt in Kansas en Missouri (een ervaring waar regisseur Peter Bogdanovich in zijn essayboek Pieces of Time uit 1972 kleurrijk aan terugdacht). De 9-jarige Tatum O’Neal won een Oscar voor Beste Actrice en versloeg daarmee Costar Kahn. Paper Moon werd later een kortstondige tv-serie met Ryan O’Neal lookalike Christopher Connelly en de toekomstige Oscarwinnares Jodie Foster.

The year is 1936. Orphaned Addie Loggins (Tatum O’Neal, in her film debut) is left in the care of unethical travelling Bible salesman Moses Pray (Ryan O’Neal, Tatum’s dad), who may or may not be her father. En route to Addie’s relatives, Moses learns that the 9-year-old is quite a handful: she smokes, cusses, and is almost as devious and manipulative as he is. They join forces as swindlers, working together so well that Addie is averse to breaking up the team — which is one reason that she sabotages the romance between Moses and good-time gal Trixie Delight (Madeline Kahn). Later, while attempting to square a $200 debt that Addie claims he owes her, Moses runs afoul of of a bootlegger (John Hillerman) and is nearly beaten to death by the criminal’s twin-brother sheriff. Painfully pulling himself together, Moses gets Addie to her relatives, whereupon she adamantly refuses to leave his side. Photographed in black-and-white by Laszlo Kovacs, the film was made largely on location in Kansas and Missouri (an experience colorfully recalled by director Peter Bogdanovich in his 1972 book of essays Pieces of Time). 9-year-old Tatum O’Neal won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar, beating out costar Kahn. Paper Moon later became a short-lived TV series, starring Ryan O’Neal lookalike Christopher Connelly and future Oscar winner Jodie Foster.
