La Notte

In Michelangelo Antonioni’s opvolger van het baanbrekende L’Avventura schittert actrice Monica Vitti – die haar kenmerkende blonde kapsel verruilt voor een ravenzwart kapsel – als de verleidster die de relatie tussen een romanschrijver (Marcello Mastroianni) en zijn gefrustreerde vrouw (Jeanne Moreau) verder compliceert. In de loop van één nacht confronteert het getrouwde stel hun vervreemding van elkaar en de pijnlijk lege burgerlijke Milanese kringen waarin ze reizen.

La Notte, een van de meesterwerken van de cinema uit de jaren 1960, markeerde weer een nieuwe ontwikkeling in de voortdurende stilistische evolutie van de regisseur en toonde Vitti’s vermogen om het scherm te boeien, zelfs als haar rol van ondergeschikt belang zou zijn. De stemmig sensuele cinematografie en subtiel expressieve vertolkingen maken La Notte tot een onuitwisbare illustratie van romantische en sociale aftakeling.

Over the course of one night, the married couple confronts their alienation from each other and the achingly empty bourgeois Milan circles in which they travel.

One of the masterworks of 1960s cinema, La Notte marked yet another development in the continuous stylistic evolution of its director and showcased Vitti’s ability to captivate the screen even if her role would be minor. Moodily sensual cinematography and subtly expressive performances make La Notte an indelible illustration of romantic and social deterioration.
