Incroyable Mais Vrai

Cult director Quentin Dupieux brings us not one but two absurd ideas in one of the most funny and enjoyable films of the year

While hunting for a new home, forty-somethings Alain and Marie come across a house with some rather extraordinary qualities: stairs to the basement lead to the bedroom on the first floor and offer the opportunity to travel through time. Meanwhile, Alain’s boss has installed an electronic penis, which causes a few problems.

After the absurd Mandibles (Imagine 2021), Quentin Dupieux brings us not one but two absurd premises, which he consistently takes to the extreme. For any other director, the fact that Alain and Marie can age backwards because of the time portal in their basement might have been the starting point for a satire on the cult of youth and beauty. But not for Dupieux, who moves from one absurd scene to the next and, with his deadpan style, gets maximum mileage out of each of them. Incredible But True may not dig very deep, but its succession of absurd ideas and weird takes does make it one of the most fun and amusing films of the year.
