De debuutfilm van Martika Ramirez Escobar is het soort genre-buigende, logica-tartende goocheltruc die maar één keer in een blauwe maan verschijnt. Een welsprekende liefdesbrief aan de cinema (met name de Filippijnse B Action-cinema uit de jaren 80!) en tegelijk een toespraak aan familie en de aard van liefde. Het is boeiend, charmant, erg grappig, en buitengewoon surrealistisch.
Sheila Francisco is grandioos als Leonor Reyes, een gepensioneerde scenarioschrijver van Filippijnse actiefilms. Door een triest ongeluk raakt Leonors lichaam in coma in het ziekenhuis, terwijl haar geest in een van haar eigen onvolledige scripts terechtkomt. Ondertussen verzamelt haar familie zich rond haar bed in het ziekenhuis, elk met hun eigen problemen – of het nu gaat om fouten uit het verleden of onbeantwoorde liefde, iedereen moet worstelen met zichzelf en hun liefde voor Leonor, terwijl Leonor moet samenwerken met actiehelden van het zilveren scherm en vecht tegen schurken om te overleven. Het volstaat te zeggen dat het eindresultaat onvergetelijk zal zijn!

Martika Ramirez Escobar’s debut film is the kind of genre-bending, logic-defying magic trick that only happens once in a blue moon: at once an eloquent love-letter to cinema (80’s Filipino B Action cinema in particular!) and a discourse about family and the nature of love, it’s engaging, charming, very funny and superbly surreal.
Sheila Francisco is superb as Leonor Reyes, a retired screenwriter of Filipino action movies. An unfortunate accident sees Leonor’s body stuck in a coma in the hospital whereas her mind ends up in one of her own unfinished scripts. Meanwhile her family gathers round her bedside at the hospital, each one with problems of their own to face – whether it’s past mistakes or unrequited love, each one must contend with themselves and their love for Leonor whilst Leonor must work alongside action heroes of the silver screen and fight villains to survive. Suffice it to say, the end result will be unforgettable!
