De in Wales geboren Zambiaanse regisseur Rungano Nyoni gaat haar stempel drukken op de Britse cinema met haar baanbrekende eerste speelfilm I Am Not a Witch. De film is scherp satirisch en gedurfd provocerend en oogstte ongelooflijke lof van zowel publiek als critici tijdens de Directors’ Fortnight van Cannes 2017.
Wanneer de achtjarige Shula alleen en onaangekondigd opduikt in een landelijk Zambiaans dorp, is de lokale bevolking achterdochtig. Een klein incident escaleert tot een echt heksenproces, waarbij ze schuldig wordt bevonden en veroordeeld wordt tot levenslang in een door de staat geleid heksenkamp. Daar wordt ze vastgebonden aan een lang wit lint en krijgt ze te horen dat als ze ooit probeert weg te lopen, ze in een geit zal veranderen. Naarmate de dagen verstrijken, begint Shula zich in haar nieuwe gemeenschap te integreren, maar een bedreiging doemt op aan de horizon. Al snel wordt ze gedwongen een moeilijke beslissing te nemen – of ze zich neerlegt bij het leven in het kamp, of een risico neemt voor de vrijheid.
Soms ontroerend, vaak grappig en soms surrealistisch, I Am Not a Witch biedt een betoverend verhaal met vlagen van anarchistische humor. De film is gedurfd en onvergetelijk en laat Rungano Nyoni zien als een frisse en onverschrokken nieuwe stem in de Britse film.

When eight-year-old Shula turns up alone and unannounced in a rural Zambian village, the locals are suspicious. A minor incident escalates to a full-blown witch trial, where she is found guilty and sentenced to life on a state-run witch camp. There, she is tethered to a long white ribbon and told that if she ever tries to run away, she will be transformed into a goat. As the days pass, Shula begins to settle into her new community, but a threat looms on the horizon. Soon she is forced to make a difficult decision – whether to resign herself to life on the camp, or take a risk for freedom.
At times moving, often funny and occasionally surreal, I Am Not a Witch offers spellbinding storytelling with flashes of anarchic humour. Audacious and unforgettable, it showcases Rungano Nyoni as a fresh and fearless new voice in British film.
