Fando y Lis (4K Restoration)

Alejandro Jodorowsky’s eerste speelfilm, Fando y Lis, is een rauwe en bijtend onderzoek naar destructieve afhankelijkheid tussen twee geliefden die in conflict zijn vanwege de angst en de eisen die ze aan elkaar opleggen. Jodorowsky’s groteske beelden veroorzaakten een rel tijdens de première van de films in 1968 op het filmfestival van Acapulco. Jodorowsky ontsnapte ternauwernood nadat hij met zijn leven was bedreigd en zijn limousine werd door de bioscoopbezoekers met stenen bekogeld. De film werd uiteindelijk verboden in Mexico. Fando y Lis is een buitengewoon ambitieuze en typisch excessieve bewerking van een controversieel toneelstuk van Fernando Arrabal, en legt de kiem voor vele thema’s die Jodorowsky in zijn latere werken zou verkennen.

Deze met zorg vervaardigde restauratie, onder toezicht van meneer Jodorowsky, is afkomstig van twee bronnen: het originele 35mm negatief en een enkel spoel van het duplicaat negatief, waardoor de meest zuivere versie van de film beschikbaar is gekomen.

Alejandro Jodorowsky’s first feature, Fando y Lis, is a brutal and scathing examination of destructive co-dependence between two lovers conflicted by anguish and the demands they put on one another. Its grotesque and salacious imagery caused a riot at the 1968 premiere in Acapulco Film Festival which Jodorowsky narrowly escaped after having his life threatened, only to have his limousine pelted with rocks by moviegoers. The film was eventually banned in Mexico. Boasting some of his most disturbing images, Fando y Lis, is an extraordinarily ambitious and excessive adaptation of a controversial play by Fernando Arrabal, and sows the seeds for many thematic tropes and themes that Jodorowsky would explore in his later works.

This meticulous restoration, overseen by Mr. Jodorowsky, comes from two sources: the original 35mm negative and the one reel from the duplicate negative, making for the most pristine version of the film available.
