Bedrog. Fraude. Illusie. In F For Fake, een quasi-documentaire in vrije vorm van Orson Welles (Citizen Kane), houdt de legendarische filmmaker (en zelfverklaard charlatan) zich opnieuw bezig met de centrale bekommernis van zijn carrière: de dunne scheidslijnen tussen illusie en waarheid, kunst en vervalsing. Als voorloper van het moderne ‘video essay’ én de zogenaamde ‘mockumentary’ doet de term ‘documentaire’ geen recht aan deze geweldig erudiete en geestige mix van archiefbeelden, home-video, goocheltrucs en fake news avant la lettre. Beginnend met portretten van de wereldberoemde kunstvervalser Elmyr de Hory en zijn al even slinkse biograaf Clifford Irving, begint Welles aan een duizelingwekkende reis die vervalsingen en bedriegers van allerlei pluimage bekritiseert en bewierookt – en niet in de laatste plaats Welles zelf. Charmant en inventief; F For Fake is tegelijkertijd een geïnspireerd filmisch experiment en een slim onderzoek naar de onmiskenbare dubbelhartigheid van cinema.
De film werd gerestaureerd door Les Films de l’Astrophore en La Cinémathèque Française in samenwerking met Documentaire Sur Grand Écran, de Zwitserse Cinematheque en het Audiovisueel Instituut van Monaco en met de steun van de Neuflize OBC Foundation en het Hiventy laboratorium.

In F For Fake, a free-form quasi-documentary by Orson Welles (Citizen Kane), the legendary filmmaker (and self-proclaimed charlatan) once again deals with the central preoccupation of his career: the thin dividing lines between illusion and truth, art and forgery. A precursor of the modern ‘video essay’ as well as the so-called ‘mockumentary’, the term ‘documentary’ does not do justice to this wonderfully erudite and witty mix of archive footage, home video, magic tricks and fake news avant la lettre. Beginning with portraits of world-famous art forger Elmyr de Hory and his equally devious biographer Clifford Irving, Welles embarks on a dizzying journey criticizing and adorning forgeries and swindlers of all kinds – not least Welles himself. Charming and inventive; F For Fake is at once an inspired cinematic experiment and a clever examination of the undeniable duplicity of cinema.
The film was restored by Les Films de l’Astrophore and La Cinémathèque Française in collaboration with Documentaire Sur Grand Écran, the Swiss Cinematheque and the Audiovisual Institute of Monaco, and with the support of the Neuflize OBC Foundation and the Hiventy Laboratory.
