Edward Scissorhands is een Amerikaanse romantische dark fantasy film uit 1990 geregisseerd door Tim Burton, geproduceerd door Denise Di Novi en Tim Burton, en geschreven door Caroline Thompson naar een verhaal van Tim Burton en Caroline Thompson, met Johnny Depp in de hoofdrol als een kunstmatige man genaamd Edward, een onafgemaakte creatie die schaarbladen heeft in plaats van handen. De jonge man wordt opgenomen door een gezin in een buitenwijk en wordt verliefd op hun tienerdochter Kim (Winona Ryder). Burton bedacht Edward Scissorhands vanuit zijn jeugd in Burbank, Californië. Tijdens de preproductie van Beetlejuice werd Caroline Thompson ingehuurd om Burton’s verhaal aan te passen tot een scenario en de film begon met de ontwikkeling bij 20th Century Fox, nadat Warner Bros. had geweigerd. Edward Scissorhands werd vervolgens versneld opgenomen na Burton’s kritieke en financiële succes met Batman. Het grootste deel van de opnames vond plaats in Lakeland, Florida tussen 10 maart en 10 juni 1990. De film markeert ook de vierde samenwerking tussen Burton en filmmuziekcomponist Danny Elfman.
De hoofdrol van Edward was in verband gebracht met verschillende acteurs voordat Depp werd gecast: een ontmoeting tussen Burton en de voorkeursrol van de studio, Tom Cruise, leverde niets op en Gary Oldman en Tom Hanks sloegen de rol af. Burton conceived Edward Scissorhands from his childhood upbringing in suburban Burbank, California. During pre-production of Beetlejuice, Caroline Thompson was hired to adapt Burton’s story into a screenplay, and the film began development at 20th Century Fox, after Warner Bros. denied. Edward Scissorhands was then fast tracked after Burton’s critical and financial success with Batman. The majority of filming took place in Lakeland, Florida between March 10 and June 10, 1990. The film also marks the fourth collaboration between Burton and film score composer Danny Elfman.
The leading role of Edward had been connected to several actors prior to Depp’s casting: a meeting between Burton and the preferred choice of the studio, Tom Cruise, was not fruitful, and Gary Oldman and Tom Hanks turned down the part. The character of The Inventor was devised specifically for Vincent Price, and would be his last major role. Edward’s scissor hands were created and designed by Stan Winston.
