De jonge turnster Tinja woont met haar familie in een buitenwijk en is vooral bezig het haar moeder naar de zin te maken – een vrouw die obsessief haar perfecte, idyllische bestaan wil delen op haar blog. Als Tinja op een dag een vreemd ei in het bos vindt en dat mee naar huis neemt om ervoor te zorgen, is dat het begin van een vreemd conflict waarin de familie geconfronteerd zal worden met haar eigen ware aard.

Regisseur Hanna Bergholms voortreffelijke debuutfilm is zowel een geweldige satire in een authentiek horrorjasje, als een heldere observatie van de scherpe randjes van moeder-dochterrelaties. Het verhaal speelt zich af in een Stepford Wives-achtige voorstad, en de opzienbarende introductie van het ei en zijn wonderlijke bewoner zorgt voor intrige en voert de spanning op tot de onvermijdelijke hel losbarst in de toch al gehavende familie. Met uitmuntend acteerwerk van een cast die nergens voor terugschrikt (met name de indrukwekkende nieuwkomer Siiri Solalinna en Sophia Heikkilä als haar ietwat monsterlijke moeder) is Hatching een horrorfilm geworden met vernuft, hart èn gore – een zeldzaam brouwsel dat al onze zintuigen aanspreekt en ons hart op de mooiste manier doet terugdeinzen. Director Hanna Bergholm’s astonishing debut is a stunning satire deeply draped in the true language of horror films as well as an astute examination of the jagged edges of mother-daughter relationships.
