Prachtig gedraaide, subtiel filosofische sciencefiction over een gebroken gezin dat probeert het verlies van hun A.I.-‘zoon’ Yang te verwerken.
Nadat hun A.I.-hulp Yang er plotseling mee ophoudt moeten vader Jake, moeder Kyra en dochter Mika weer een beetje opnieuw leren leven. Vooral Jake worstelt met het verlies en de realisatie dat zijn hypermoderne bestaan in de weg is gaan staan van verbintenis met zijn dierbaren. Een wonderschone meditatie over rouw, connectie en (dis)balans.
After Yang is het sci-fi-debuut van de bekende video-essayist Kogonada, die eerder het ingetogen drama Columbus (2017) maakte. Ook hier draait hij uiterst beheerst aan de knoppen, met een wonderschoon meditatief resultaat. In deze toekomstige wereldstad hebben tactiele, duurzame materialen het overgenomen van harde plastics en stroomt alles in ogenschijnlijke rust langs elkaar. Ieder personage is op zoek naar verbinding en hoognodige balans – in het verkeer, in hun contact met anderen, in kolkende koppen groene thee. De dagen komen en gaan, in rustige, prachtige flarden geschoten door cinematograaf Benjamin Loeb (Mandy). Zen sci-fi van de bovenste plank.

After their A.I.-aide Yang suddenly stops working, father Jake, mother Kyra and daughter Mika almost have to learn to live again. Especially Jake struggles with his loss and the realization that his ultra-modern existence has gotten in the way of connecting with his loved ones. A stunning meditation on grief, connection and (im)balance.
After Yang is the sci-fi debut of renowned video essayist Kogonada, who previously made the subdued drama Columbus (2017). Here, too, he uses restraint, with a beautifully meditative result. In this cosmopolitan city of the future, tactile, durable materials have taken over from hard plastics and everything flows together in apparent tranquillity. Every character is looking for connection and a much-needed equilibrium – in traffic, in contact with others, in swirling cups of green tea. The days come and go, in peaceful, beautiful vignettes filmed by cinematographer Benjamin Loeb (Mandy). Zen sci-fi of the highest caliber.
