Augure

Na achttien jaar keert Koffi terug naar zijn geboorteland Congo om er zijn zwangere vrouw aan zijn familie voor te stellen en de traditionele bruidsschat te betalen. De reünie verloopt echter niet zoals verwacht: hoewel Koffi met man en macht probeert de banden weer aan te sterken, is en blijft hij voor de gemeenschap een ‘teken van de duivel’. Koffi lijkt zich moeilijk los te kunnen wrikken uit de diepgewortelde geloofsovertuigingen van zijn familie. Samen met andere ‘duivelskinderen’ besluit hij de vurige strijd aan te gaan om dit helse label van zich af te werpen. Augure is een bezwerend drama over identiteit, ontheemding en de hunkering naar acceptatie op de achtergrond van een magisch-realistisch Congo. Het speelfilmdebuut van het Belgisch-Congolese multitalent Baloji werd geïnspireerd door het gewicht van zijn naam, dat in de koloniale tijd de beladen betekenis van ‘tovenaar’ kreeg. Naast de regie en het scenario verzorgde Baloji ook de kostuums en nam hij vier gloednieuwe albums op bij de film, gebaseerd op de hoofdpersonages. Het visueel verbluffende resultaat werd in Cannes bekroond met de New Voice Prize en won internationaal nog vele andere prijzen.

After eighteen years, Koffi returns to his native Congo to introduce his pregnant wife to his family and pay the traditional dowry. However, the reunion does not go as expected: although Koffi tries with all his might to reestablish ties, to the community he is and remains a “sign of the devil. Koffi seems difficult to pry himself away from his family’s deeply held religious beliefs. Along with other “devil children,” he decides to engage in the fiery battle to cast off this hellish label. Augure is an incantatory drama about identity, displacement and the yearning for acceptance set against the backdrop of a magical-realist Congo. The feature debut of Belgian-Congolese multitalented Baloji was inspired by the weight of his name, which took on the loaded meaning of “magician” in colonial times. In addition to directing and scripting, Baloji also provided the costumes and recorded four brand-new albums to accompany the film, based on the main characters. The visually stunning result was awarded the New Voice Prize at Cannes and won many other awards internationally.
