LAB CLASSICS: BLOOD SIMPLE (40TH ANNIVERSARY)
Coinciding with the retrospective The Coen Brothers Complete at EYE Filmmuseum and celebrating its 40th anniversary, we’re happy to bring the breakout neo-noir debut of the Coens back to our cinema in a stunning new 4K restoration.
The feature film debut of the lauded ‘Coen Brothers’ (No Country For Old Men, Fargo, The Big Lebowski). In honor of the 40th anniversary, they made a new edit, restored in 4K and with dolby sound. Blood Simple was also the first major film by cinematographer Barry Sonnenfeld (The Addams Family, Men In Black, Get Shorty). With Blood Simple, Joel and Ethan Coen delivered their black-comic calling card right away. A café owner in a small Texas town discovers that his wife is having an affair with one of his employees and hires a private detective to kill the two. Only, the latter turns out not to be too clever. When a dead body is discovered, a complex web of deceit and double agendas emerges and it is only a matter of time before more victims fall. The plotlines become ingeniously intertwined, with strong acting from Frances McDormand (Fargo), among others, who makes her feature film debut here.
