INTERNATIONAL CINEMA: TIGER STRIPES
We continue with our series of International Cinema – where we offer the best foreign movies with English subtitles. Malaysian director Amanda Nell Eu’s debut about a young girl discovering the truth behind her rebellious nature bristles with supernatural energy thanks to a tremendous young cast.
Amanda Nell Eu’s brilliant, incisive, funny, and energetic debut is one for the ages: working by and large with a cast of newcomers, she explores what it means to be young and changing in Malaysia. Zaffan’s struggles with puberty are only matched by her desperate attempts to hide the physical changes she’s experiencing, afraid those around her might find out she’s a monster. But all of this is surrounded by the very real restraints of Malaysian society. Arriving like a breath of fresh air, Tiger Stripes hums with the energy of youth which must be experienced to be believed.
