INTERNATIONAL CINEMA: SMALL, SLOW BUT STEADY
We continue with our series of International Cinema – where we offer the best foreign movies with English subtitles. This meditative boxing tale follows Keiko, deaf since birth, making her way in the ring when Covid-19 lockdown arrives in Japan and she must deal with confidence issues.
Unlike any other sports film you’ve seen before, Small, Slow But Steady is the tender and meditative adaptation of Keiko Ogasawara’s memoir. Filmed on tactile 16mm, the film follows Keiko (Yukino Kishii), a Deaf amateur boxer, as she trains for her upcoming fights in Tokyo.
But with the impact of the pandemic threatening the closure of her local club and her mentor coping with a serious illness, Keiko is rocked by the uncertainty of losing her beloved community and devoted father-figure.
Can she recover her determination to forge her own path in a world indifferent to deafness?
