INTERNATIONAL CINEMA: SKUNK
We continue with our series of International Cinema – where we offer the best foreign movies with English subtitles. Director Koen Mortier’s raw film Skunk gives a penetrating look at the impact of childhood traumas on young lives and the issues, but also the hard work in youth psychiatry with limited resources. The film – based on the book by a Flemish youth worker – received rave reviews in Belgium and has already won two awards.
Neglected teenager Liam grows up in a family where drugs and violence play the main role. When his destructive home is exchanged for a juvenile institution, the boy finds solace, but also finds himself in a group of boys, each with their own issues. Liam is sensitive, wary and afraid of being hurt, but damaged to the extent that he also has a dangerous side. Little by little, his companions manage to break him open, but Liam’s past continues to haunt him.
