INTERNATIONAL CINEMA: SCHIRKOA
We continue with our series of International Cinema – where we offer the best foreign movies with English subtitles. The fantastic new sci-fi animation Schirkoa by director Ishan Shukla is a metaphorical reaction to today’s political climate, where concerns about surveillance, censorship, and government overreach arise.
Schirkoa is a testament to the power of animation as a medium for telling complex and mature stories. It explores a dystopian world where conformity is enforced through the limitation of self-expression. Drawing inspiration from George Orwell’s 1984 and the works of Kafka, Fellini, or Jodorowsky, Schirkoa exposes the dangers of unchecked government control and the suppression of dissent. What also makes the movie stand out is its unique neo-noir visual style and the voice cast, featuring Golshifteh Farahani, Asia Argento, Lav Diaz, and Gaspar Noé.
