INTERNATIONAL CINEMA: LES INDÉSIRABLES
We continue with our series of International Cinema – where we offer the best foreign movies with English subtitles. A brilliantly directed epic of displacement, bristling with empathy and rage, Ladj Ly’s follow-up to Les Misérables is a searing portrait of gentrification, politics, and race. To contextualize the release of Les Indésirables, we’re also screening Les Misérables again.
After the death of the mayor, Pierre, an idealistic young doctor, is appointed as the new mayor. He wants to continue the plans of his predecessor: to restore the impoverished suburb. Pierre clashes with Haby, a young local activist who is afraid that her and her family will be evicted from their flats. Together they discuss the best path forward for their impoverished suburb.
Director Ladj Ly’s critically acclaimed film debut Les Misérables was nominated for an Oscar in 2020. With his new film Les Indésirables Ladj Ly, again, portrays a personal and powerful political story of a community struggling to find its place within society.
