Imagine is het grootste filmfestival voor de Fantastische film in Nederland, met het beste op het gebied van fantasy, horror, sciencefiction en alles daar tussenin. Bij Imagine draait het om de verbeelding. Met het hoofdthema 1984 Re:Imagined zoekt het festival aan de hand van een aantal klassiekers (waaronder de verfilmingen van de dystopische sci-fi-romans 1984 en Fahrenheit 451) en recente films welke lessen we vandaag de dag uit het verleden kunnen trekken.

Was het toeval of een vooruitziende blik dat uitgerekend het iconische Orwelliaanse jaartal 1984 het geboortejaar van Imagine Fantastic Film Festival was? Wat bescheiden begon als The Weekend of Terror transformeerde tot hét toonaangevende genrefestival van Nederland waarin naast horror sci-fi, cult, fantasy en kunst even sterk zijn vertegenwoordigd. Met het hoofdthema 1984 Re:Imagined zoekt het festival aan de hand van een aantal klassiekers (waaronder de verfilmingen van de dystopische sci-fi-romans 1984 en Fahrenheit 451) en recente films welke lessen we vandaag de dag – 75 jaar na de publicatie van Orwells klassieker – uit het verleden kunnen trekken. Want om met George Orwell te spreken: ‘Wie het verleden beheerst, beheerst de toekomst, wie het heden beheerst, beheerst het verleden’.

Was it coincidence or foresight that the iconic Orwellian year of 1984 was the birth year of Imagine Fantastic Film Festival, of all places? What began modestly as The Weekend of Terror transformed into the Netherlands’ leading genre festival in which sci-fi, cult, fantasy and art are equally represented alongside horror. With the main theme 1984 Re:Imagined, the festival will use several classics (including film adaptations of the dystopian sci-fi novels 1984 and Fahrenheit 451) and recent films to find out what lessons we can learn from the past today – 75 years after the publication of Orwell’s classic. After all, in the words of George Orwell, ‘He who controls the past controls the future; he who controls the present controls the past’.
