In the month of International Women’s Day, and her passing in 2019 at the age of 91, we celebrate one of the most important female filmmakers; the grand-mêre of the French Nouvelle Vague, Agnès Varda. After focussing on her more recent work in december ’19 we’ve decided to this time put the emphasis on her breakthrough, early cinema with the three wonderful classics La Pointe Courte, Cléo de 5 à 7 en Le Bonheur.

Companion Piece: The VVitch
Visionair regisseur Robert Eggers is definitief aan het doorbreken met zijn hypnotische vuurtorenvertelling The Lighthouse (vanaf 27 februari in de Nederlandse bioscopen), maar in 2016 intrigeerde hij al met bescheiden horror-meesterwerk The VVitch. Dit intrigerende en subtiele speelfilmdebuut, over een puriteinse familie in het New England van de 17de eeuw, zie je vanaf februari bij ons!
LAB Classics: Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels
Guy Ritchie behaalde met zijn eerste film wellicht meer kritisch en financieel succes dan zijn collega’s in hun gehele carrière bijeen zouden sprokkelen en werd op basis van zijn debuut Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels één van de meest spraakmakende regisseur van het Groot-Brittannië van de eind ’90 en begin ’00. Deze hyper-gestileerde ‘crime caper’ annex zwarte komedie uit 1998 werd al snel vergeleken met dat andere gestileerde debuut van ene Quentin Tarantino en de Hongkongse misdaadspektakels van John Woo.
Voorpremière: The Gentlemen
Na zijn grote doorbraak met ‘crime caper’ Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels en de aanverwante Snatch groeide Guy Ritchie uit tot één van de meest spraakmakende regisseur van het Groot-Brittannië van de eind ’90 en begin ’00. Deze februari keert Ritchie eindelijk terug naar het genre waar we hem het liefste zien. The Gentlemen is een onvervalste misdaadflick annex zwarte komedie in de stijl van zijn vroege klassiekers. Let op: The Gentlemen is eenmalig bij ons als voorpremière én ook LAB Classics: Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels (1998) is weer te zien!

Romanian New Wave
Coinciding with the release of Corneliu Porumboiu’s new comedic thriller The Whistlers, and the final days of our Romanian intern Ted Grindei working at our cinema, we bring an ode to the Romanian New Wave movement. Usually set in the last 30 years (from the final years of communism to the present day), the new wave films add up to a vivid record of the country’s history at a time of frequent crisis. Romania’s strongest cinematic era began in the early 2000s and produced a string of award-winning films, six of which we’ll be showing during this program.
