BLACK SOIL FILM FESTIVAL
15 december 2023
After a successful comeback following a fifteen-year hiatus, the Black Soil Film Festival is back. Originating in 2004 as Europe’s first hip-hop film festival, it has now expanded its focus to encompass the broader scope of black culture. It’s a celebration of the African diaspora, which is at the heart of the emerging black European art movement NOW!
We highlight films that both originate and result from black culture and everything in between and screen the very best of independent cinema at three locations in Rotterdam, The Hague and Amsterdam. The festival offers an immersive experience, featuring insightful talks, thought-provoking short films, inspiring feature-length productions, and notable musical performances.
Black Soil Film Festival will showcase a group of films that explicitly interrogate systems of oppression and call for the liberation of all Black and Indigenous People of Color. This year’s selections include Why Is We Americans, Softie, Sweet Sugar Rage.

When you think of the personification of hip hop in the Netherlands, who do you see? For many outside of Europe the first thing that comes to mind is a white male wearing a Patta jumpsuit rocking a fitted. When the truth is hip hop in the Netherlands like all over the world derives from Black culture and originates from Black people. What is the origin story of hip hop in the Netherlands and Europe? And how is cultural appropriation defined in Europe? Who benefits from this golden age of hip hop?

Powertalk Roundtable: Keys to the Gate (hosted by hiphophuis)
In an attempt to shake up the status quo and create opportunities for BIPOC, several platforms have emerged with the explicit intention of serving BIPOC. Join us for a roundtable discussion about what it means to hold space for Black creatives. We will hear from industry leaders about the challenges and rewards of creating their own “tables.” What have they learned? How do they provide cover for Black people when engaging with PWIs (predominantly white institutions)? This PowerTalk roundtable is geared towards fostering an exchange of knowledge within our community to create awareness and ownership.
