To celebrate the release of The Apprentice by Ali Abbasi, we present various screenings of Gräns—an underappreciated gem that explores themes resonant in Abbasi’s latest work. Gräns delves deep into complex moral landscapes, offering a gripping narrative that challenges conventional views on power, authority, and justice.
Tina is a valuable force at the border guard. Able to smell feelings like guilt, shame and fear, she effortlessly picks smugglers out of the crowd. One day, a suspicious-looking man steps off the ferry. Unable to discover what he is hiding, Tina becomes mesmerized by this Vore and his mysterious aura. She feels a kinship with him that she does not know with others. Her investigation into him reveals much more than she could expect; her entire existence is based on lies. Now she must choose whether to accept Vore’s shocking truth.
Gräns is an unpredictable and gripping genre remix from director Ali Abbasi and screenwriter John Ajvide Lindqvist, the writer of Let the Right One In. The film won the Un Certain Regard Award at the 2018 Cannes film festival.
